About Us

Helping both underprivileged kids and challenged athletes from the Special Olympics, Sports for Exceptional Athletes and other similar organizations enjoy sun and surf!

The first Day at the Beach event started in 1986 by Windansea Surf Club’s then president Rob Luscomb who wanted to get the club of surfers positively involved with the community.  He thought there was no better way than to share their stoke for surfing with the homeless children at St. Vincent de Paul shelter in downtown San Diego.   At the time, it was is a full day of surf instruction, complete with morning breakfast and huge picnic lunch for all.   Realizing that the day had a huge positive impact not only for the kids but for the club members that volunteered, Windansea club member Scot Cherry took the helm as event director to ensure the Day at the Beach event would be an annual event and the kids of St. Vincent de Paul could look forward  every year to spending a memorable summer day surfing with the Windansea Surf Club.

Beginning in 2001 a second “Day at the Beach” event was started to benefit people of all ages afflicted with Down Syndrome, Autism and other challenges. We have come to call this “Special Surfers – Day at the Beach”.

Mark your calendar for 2018 upcoming events:

  • July 14th –18th Annual Special Surfers Day at the Beach
  • August 11th – 33rd Annual Kids Day at the Beach
