DATB 2014

“Day at the Beach” started in 1986 as a full day of surf instruction, complete with morning breakfast and huge picnic lunch for all.  This event benefits children of homeless families residing at the St. Vincent De Paul shelter in downtown San Diego. Over 60 kids from this shelter attend each year and have the time of their lives!

  1. Very excited for this, the 14th Annual Special Surfers Day at the Beach! Volunteers please show up by 7:30, and all participants, as well as their coaches, caregivers, and/or parents will be expected by 9. We set up behind the restrooms at the north end of the parking lot at La Jolla Shores Beach. Parking is limited so please arrive early!
As usual, we will have a fairly full breakfast for all: coffee, hot chocolate, juice, fruit, muffins and donuts. Then after a brief introductory “safety talk” with the participants it’s into the water for surf lessons! At lunchtime we have a big Bar-B-Q lunch for everyone. After that it’s back into the water for more surfing lessons. To wrap up the day we do a give away of T-Shirts with our logo for all attending, participants and volunteers alike! (Sorry, but coaches, parents and siblings please wait until others have been taken care of as supplies are limited. Hopefully we’ll have some left over for you too!)
We also give away a beach bag for every Special Surfer, with a trophy – AND have not only a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd – but this year we are honoring the memory of Butch VanArtsdalen, the first man to truly conquer the famous Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. Butch was a WindanSea Surf Club member, and a man with a huge heart who was a hero to many here, in Hawaii, and around the world. We are calling it the Butch Big Heart Award – for whoever shows the most heart that day, has the most fun, and the biggest smile!
